You cannot convert a Word document to PDF just by changing the file name. Instead, you should follow the guidelines below. If you want to add digital material to supplement your coursework or exam paper (film, sound recordings, programmes, etc.), you should upload this material as “Appendix material.”.Word limits and assignment length. Assignment length requirements are usually given in terms of numbers of words. Unless the lecturer tells you that these limits are strict, it is normally acceptable to be 10% above or below this word limit (so, for example, a 2000 word assignment should be between 1800 and 2200 words).For example, if your word limit is 2,000 words and you write between 2,001 and 2,199 words, you will lose 5 marks so a mark of 71% would be reduced to 66%, a mark of 43% would be reduced to 40% but a mark of 39% would not be reduced.
Planning for the Word Limit. Since word limits are important, whether you are working on a short report or an 80,000 word thesis, it is a good idea to work out how many sections you will need to cover the topic adequately. You will then be able to work out the rough length that each paragraph or section should be to meet the word limit.

As a rule, never submit anything that is more than 10% below a word limit. The limit is there for a reason, if you're under it significantly then you're either going to give the impression that you didn't make sufficient effort, that you rushed it or that you didn't understand the topic.
The word lengths are inclusive of quotations and footnotes but not of bibliography. You will be asked to provide a word count of your essays on the cover sheet which you complete when the work is submitted. We allow a penalty-free margin of up to 10% over or under-length. Essays that are 10-25% over or under-length will incur a penalty of 3 marks.

Any policy for word count penalties must be published to students prior to submission of the assessment. This consistutes a change in policy (formerly the bibliography was included in the word count for coursework assignments) that was implemented following consultation with MSc Programme Directors and the Graduate School Student-Staff Liaison Committee in February 2015.

The word limit for a piece or pieces of directed independent learning shall be defined at programme approval and will be equivalent to the effort required to prepare a dissertation of up to 20,000 words. Colleges must specify the exact requirements in their College Handbooks.
